ORGANIZATIONAL HEROES: COMMUNICATING WHAT MATTERS MOST EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW Who are our organizational heroes? What makes an organizational hero? And why do we need heroes in the organization? We attempted to find the answers from a group of middle-level executives in Hong Kong. They were asked to identify critical incidents showing behaviors of their bosses, peers, or ordinary employees who have acted in ways perceived as being heroic. The respondents represent a broad sample of companies in Hong Kong. They were asked to explain why they had considered these people as organizational heroes and describe the situations or conditions when these individuals had behaved heroically. Critical incidents were gathered using a†¦show more content†¦Each year, through its program Heroes of the Heart, the company recognizes staff who work behind the curtains, providing outstanding support to other departments and staff . The message is clear -- that the company values employees who help one another above and beyond the scope of required work. Unsung heroes have also become the subject of business writings. In their book The Real Heroes of Business and Not a CEO among Them, Fromm and Schlesinger featured fourteen such individuals who had made significant contributions to their organizations. They had little organizational power, resources, or influence. Yet they performed their jobs beyond expected standards and were honored by customers and organizational members. What Makes A Hero? According to Joseph Campbell, who wrote Hero with a Thousand Faces, a hero story typically featured a main character that had done something beyond the normal range of achievement and experience . The hero has a moral objective that does not involve personal gain. Rather than be a spectator, a hero actively takes part in making things happen. Heroes often have to overcome insurmountable odds or battle with enemies within and outside the organization to do the right thing and help other individuals. The enemy could also be in the form of inefficient work processes, or a problem that is hard to solve.
